Solar energy has become a popular type of non-conventional source of energy. It is a power from
the sun- which is a vast, inexhaustible and clean resource. In the present time, when there is an
increase in greenhouse gases, the use of solar energy is of utmost importance.
Reasons of its importance:-
● Environment friendly:- does not lead to pollution unlike conventional sources which are
highly polluting therefore causing global warming and depletion of natural resources.
● Cost-effective source:- unlike fossil fuels which are quite expensive but in case of solar
energy it is not so. A one-time installation of a solar plant is the only prerequisite.
● Ensures economic growth and creates jobs:- more this type of energy is supported, more
people will be required by companies to sustain the clean energy system.
● Improvement of grid security:- with renewable energy being used, blackouts will be less
and the grid will be more secure.
● Protect habitats:- forests are generally destroyed for mining raw materials for
conventional energy leading to destruction of habitats. Therefore solar power is important
to protect habitats for animals who live there.
Solar energy occupies the central position in the National Action Plan on Climate Change
Mission which was launched on 11th January, 2010.
The Mission's aim is to establish India as a
global leader in solar energy. It targets installation of 100GW grid-connected solar power plants
by 2022 and 450GW by 2030. This is in line with India's Intended National Determined
Contribution's target to achieve about 40% cumulative electric power installed capacity from
non-fossil fuel based energy resources and to reduce emission intensity of its GDP by 33-35%
from 2005 level by 2030.
In order to achieve the above mentioned target, the Government of India has launched various
schemes like- Solar Park Scheme, Defence Scheme, Building Scheme, Grid connected Solar
Rooftop Scheme etc.
International Solar Alliance(ISA) is one such platform created for this purpose. It is conceived to be an action-oriented platform for Solar energy technologies to enhance energy security as well as to provide improved access of energy to developing countries. It is an IGO launched by the PM of India and the President of France during COP21 in Paris (2015). According to 15th January
2021, 89 countries have signed the Framework Agreement of ISA.
