Shouldering the burden of societal inequities, he devoted his life to the relief of the distressed- orphans looked up to him for education, abandoned widows relied on him for maintenance, and Santhals considered him a “true friend”. Thus, Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay came to be known as Vidyasagar, Dayasagar and Karunasagar.
